Field-effect transistors (FETs) are different from the ordinary transistors (sometimes called "bipolar transistors," " bipolar junction transistors," or BJTs, to distinguish them from FETs) that we talked about in the last chapter. Broadly speaking, however, they are similar devices, which we might call charge-control devices: In both cases we have a 3-terminal divice in whiche the conduction between two electrodes depends on the availability of charge carriers, which is controlled by a voltage applied to a third control electrode. Figure 1 show a FET.
